Cognitive, Educational, ADHD, and ASD Assessments

At Serene Psychological Services, several of our clinicians complete cognitive and educational assessments, along with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) assessments. These types of assessments are essential tools used by psychologists to evaluate an individual’s cognitive abilities, learning styles, and academic performance.

These assessments provide valuable insights into a person's strengths and weaknesses, which can inform tailored interventions and support strategies whilst also identifying diagnoses such as ASD, ADHD, dyslexia, learning intellectual disabilities, and more.

If you are unsure of which assessment you or your loved one requires, feel free to read more about the assessments we offer below:

Cognitive Assessments

Cognitive assessments typically measure various intellectual abilities, including memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and processing speed. Commonly used tests, such as the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) or the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC), help psychologists understand an individual's cognitive profile. This information is crucial for identifying learning disabilities, giftedness, or other cognitive concerns that may impact academic achievement and daily functioning.

ASD Assessments

ASD assessments include clinical diagnostic interview (such as Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised), Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – Second Edition, cognitive assessment and additional assessment questionnaires to be completed by parents, teachers or other family members. These assessments are designed to identify the presence of symptoms and behaviors associated with ASD, providing insights that can inform appropriate interventions and support.

Educational Assessments

Educational assessments focus on a person's academic skills and knowledge in subjects like reading, writing, and mathematics. These evaluations often involve standardized tests and informal assessments, allowing psychologists to gauge a student's performance in relation to their peers. By analysing the results, psychologists can identify specific learning challenges, recommend appropriate educational interventions, and collaborate with educators and parents about strategies.

ADHD Assessments

ADHD assessments include a cognitive assessment, clinical diagnostic interview and additional assessment questionnaires to be completed by parents, teachers or other family members. These assessments aim to identify the presence of symptoms and behaviors associated with ADHD, offering insights that guide appropriate interventions and support and is a fundamental aspect of understanding an individual's developmental profile.

The Assessment Process:

Step One

Intake Session with Psychologist:

You will first attend an intake session / assessment with the psychologist who is going to be completing the assessment. This session typically runs for 50-60 minutes and can be parent only if a child is being assessed. This sessions begins with an introduction with the psychologist and further information on what to expect from the assessment. This is followed by a series of structured interviews and questionnaires completed by the individual, and if applicable, their parents or caregivers. The intake session and subsequent questionnaires ultimately allows the psychologist to gather comprehensive information to help with the assessment process whilst also providing the opportunity to establish rapport with the individual and their loved ones.

Step Two

Formal Assessment & Scoring

The assessment appointment will then take place and depending on what assessment is being conducted, the necessary tests will be completed with the individual. The time of assessments can vary depending on which assessment it is as well as the presentation of the individual being assessed however we allow for up to three hours.

After the formal assessment has been completed, the clinician will then score and interpret assessment data and complete a comprehensive report about the findings of the assessment and scoring.

Step Three

Feedback Session with Psychologist

Following the assessment and scoring, our admin team will contact you to organise a feedback session with the psychologist. This can go for 30 - 60 minutes. During this time, the psychologist will share the individual’s assessment results, highlighting any key findings related to symptoms and behaviors associated with the relevant diagnosis if one is found.

This session is collaborative and provides the client and their support system an opportunity to ask questions and clarify any uncertainties about the results. You will then receive a full copy of the comprehensive assessment report that was completed by the psychologist.
